Alterations

Women's alterations guide: trouser hems, waist alterations, sleeves, darts, dress alterations, blazer alterations, jeans alterations, and tailor costs.

What a tailor can fix, what to skip, what to pay.

Alterations sits under Women › Fit in the HowTo Fashion menu.

Hems, waist tweaks, sleeve shortening, dart shaping, seat adjustments, coat sleeves, dress straps, and the fixes a tailor can actually make.

Buy the hard parts right.

A tailor can finish a garment. A tailor cannot turn the wrong block into the right one.

Alterations fit reference
The best alteration is the one that protects a good garment, not excuses a bad buy.

Editor note — Hem, sleeve, and small waist changes earn their receipt. Bad shoulders and wrong rise usually do not.

Tailor Value Table

Hem — The highest-value alteration on trousers, jeans, dresses, and coats.

Waist — Small adjustments work; rebuilding a waistband can ruin drape.

Sleeve — Easy on shirts and coats unless buttons or vents complicate it.

Dart — Useful for shirts and dresses when bust and waist need different sizes.

Shoulder — Usually not worth it. Buy this right.

Read the garment before you read the size.

Trouser hem

Low cost, high impact

Waist nip

Good when the change is small

Sleeve shorten

Worth it on coats and blazers

Shoulder rebuild

Expensive and rarely clean

What the bad fit is telling you.

Almost perfect

Alter it if the fabric and construction are good.

Cheap fabric

Do not spend tailor money on a piece that will not last.

Bad shoulder

Return it unless sentimental.

Long hem

Fix before deciding the whole garment is wrong.

Each garment's faults are diagnosed in its own fit guide, including trousers from rise to hem and shirts button by button. The men's lane covers similar ground in men's alterations.
