The Fashion Edition

Women

This is the women's section of HowTo Fashion: a working library of guides for building a wardrobe, fitting it properly and getting dressed in it every day. It is written by the HowTo Fashion editors, and it treats clothes as tools for real days rather than a wishlist.

The guides fall into six groups. Build covers the core pieces: wardrobe basics, wool trousers, outerwear, footwear, handbags, accessories, and capsule, casual and work wardrobes. Fit is the diagnostic part, with guides to shirts, trousers, denim, coats, shoes, petite and tall proportions, and the alterations worth paying a tailor for. Wear turns those pieces into outfits for business casual, smart casual, date night, evening, weekends, travel, and hot or cold weather. Style deals with color, pattern, minimalism, classic dressing, personal style, editorial direction and how to judge a trend. Seasonal covers spring, summer, fall, winter and the transitional weeks in between. Finish connects the outfit to hair, makeup, nails, fragrance, jewelry, bags and shoes.

Most guides follow the same pattern. They name the pieces or formulas that do the work, explain what to check in the mirror or the fitting room, and say what to buy or change first. Use the section links above to go straight to one area, or browse the full list below.

Women is a top-level section of the HowTo Fashion menu. It has 6 sections: Build, Wear, Style, Fit, Finish and Seasonal.

A working library for getting dressed — built piece by piece, season by season. Tailoring that flatters, denim that fits, and the small finishes that turn a get-up into a look.

From the editor.

The closet you actually wear isn't a wishlist — it's a working tool. Five pieces, sometimes seven, that you pull from on the way out the door without thinking about them. Everything else is decoration. We built this lane around that idea.

The job here is to get you to a wardrobe that travels with you, season after season. Build is where you start — the pieces every closet earns its way around. Wear is the everyday — how to put them on without looking like you tried too hard. Style is the fun part: the small decisions that make a get-up specific to you.

Style isn't having more — it's knowing what to do with what you already own.

Read in any order you like. Skim the index, save what you need, come back when the seasons turn.

Style, on purpose.

The small decisions that make an outfit specific to you. Mixing, tucking, finishing — the punctuation marks of a get-up.
