Outerwear

Women's outerwear fit guide: coat shoulders, sleeve length, coat length, closure, layering room, belt placement, petite coats, and tall coats.

Coat length, layering room, shoulder ease, sleeve coverage.

Outerwear sits under Women › Fit in the HowTo Fashion menu.

Shoulder allowance, sleeve length, coat length, closure, belt placement, layering room, and the fit checks that keep outerwear from swallowing the outfit.

The coat must fit the outfit underneath.

Outerwear needs clearance, but not collapse: shoulder, sleeve, closure, and length all have to survive the layer.

Outerwear fit reference
The coat is the first thing people see for half the year. Fit it like the outfit.

Editor note — A coat that only works open is not fit. Buy for the layer you actually wear under it.

Layer Clearance

Shoulder — Can sit a touch wider than tailoring, but should not collapse.

Chest — Closes over the intended layer without pulling.

Sleeve — Covers the wrist and any jacket sleeve underneath.

Length — Hits at a proportion point: high hip, mid-thigh, knee, or calf.

Belt — Meets the natural waist or intentionally sits lower.

Read the garment before you read the size.

Trench

Shirt plus knit, belt defines waist

Overcoat

Blazer or heavy sweater underneath

Leather jacket

Exact shoulder, thinner layer only

Puffer

Room for air without ballooning through the torso

What the bad fit is telling you.

Cannot close

Wrong size, wrong layer, or coat cut too narrow.

Sleeves short

The fastest way a coat looks borrowed.

Belt too high

Petite proportion or torso mismatch.

Collar floats

Neck and shoulder relationship is off.

Choosing the coat comes before fitting it; the women's outerwear edit sorts them by weather. Petite and tall coat lengths are handled in petite fit and tall fit.
