Fit

Fit is the diagnostic part of the women's fashion guides. The eight guides here are not rules about bodies. They teach you to read garments: where fabric pulls, where a seam lands, where a hem breaks, and what that tells you about the size, the cut or the alteration you need.

Most guides follow the same structure. They show how the garment should sit, compare common cuts side by side, and end with a section on what a bad fit is telling you. "Shirts, button by button" covers bust gape, shoulder seams, darts, sleeve and cuff length across poplin, oxford, silk and linen. "Trousers, rise to hem" works from the waistband down through rise, seat, thigh and hem for high-rise, mid-rise, wide-leg and tapered styles. The denim guide recommends judging jeans after they warm up, and compares straight, slim straight, wide-leg and barrel shapes. "Outerwear, with clearance" checks shoulders, sleeves and length against the layers you will actually wear underneath. "Shoes, by symptom" treats heel slip, toe pressure, side squeeze and arch ache as information rather than something to break in.

Two guides deal with proportion: petite fit (scaled, not shrunken) and tall fit (length without width). The alterations guide explains which fixes a tailor can make cheaply and which problems to avoid at the point of purchase.

Fit sits under Women in the HowTo Fashion menu. It has 8 sections: Shirts, Trousers, Denim, Outerwear, Shoes, Alterations, Petite and Tall.

Shirts, trousers, denim, outerwear, shoes, alterations, petite, and tall fit checks for women who want the garment to work before the outfit does.

Fit pages are not about rules for bodies. They are about reading garments: where fabric pulls, where hems land, where proportions need length, ease, or tailoring.

Start with the garment that fails most often, then move to alterations if the piece is close. Petite and tall sections translate the same checks into scale and proportion.
