Alterations

Men's alterations guide: what a tailor can fix, trouser hems, jacket sleeves, waist suppression, suit alterations, shirt alterations, jeans alterations, and when not to tailor clothes.

What to tailor, what to leave, what to pay, what to ask, and when the garment is not worth saving.

Alterations sits under Men › Fit in the HowTo Fashion menu.

What to tailor, what to leave, what to pay, what to ask, and when the garment is not worth saving.

Alterations are where good buying becomes good dressing. The trick is knowing which problems are normal, which are expensive, and which mean you should have left the garment on the rack.

Start with the place the garment fails first. Fit is not a vibe; it is a sequence of visible pressures, lengths, breaks, and allowances. Read the body, then decide whether the piece is worth buying, tailoring, or leaving alone.

The points that decide fit.

Use these in order. The first bad checkpoint usually explains the rest.

Alterations fit is read from pressure, clearance, length, and line.

Hem

Usually worth it, especially trousers and jeans.

Sleeves

Worth it on jackets, shirts, and coats when the rest fits.

Waist

Useful on trousers and jackets if the change is small.

Seat

Possible, but limited by fabric and construction.

Shoulders

Usually a no. Buy them right.

Read the garment like a system.

The useful answer changes by garment: sometimes it is a break, sometimes clearance, sometimes cost.

Trouser hem — Low cost — Do it often

Jacket sleeves — Moderate — Worth it if shoulders fit

Waist suppression — Moderate — Small changes only

Shoulder rebuild — High cost — Usually walk away

What the bad fit is telling you.

Most fit problems announce themselves before you know the tailor's name for them.

The garment usually tells you what is wrong before the mirror does. Pulling, floating, pooling, twisting, and collapse are not styling problems.

Cheap garment, big fix

Skip it unless sentimental.

Good jacket, long sleeves

Alter it.

Bad shoulders

Return it.

Trousers close but pool

Hem before judging.

Knowing what a tailor can fix starts with spotting the fault, which is what suit fit, jacket first and trouser fit from rise to break walk through. The women's lane has a parallel guide to alterations worth the receipt.
