Denim
Men's denim fit guide: raw denim, waist stretch, rise, thigh room, leg opening, inseam, stacking, hemming, and how jeans should fit.
Waist stretch, rise, thigh room, leg opening, inseam, stacking, raw break-in, and when jeans should be hemmed.
Denim sits under Men › Fit in the HowTo Fashion menu.
Waist stretch, rise, thigh room, leg opening, inseam, stacking, raw break-in, and when jeans should be hemmed.
Jeans are bought in the fitting room but judged after thirty wears. The waist gives, the thigh should not fight you, and the leg opening has to make sense with the shoe you actually wear.
Start with the place the garment fails first. Fit is not a vibe; it is a sequence of visible pressures, lengths, breaks, and allowances. Read the body, then decide whether the piece is worth buying, tailoring, or leaving alone.
The points that decide fit.
Use these in order. The first bad checkpoint usually explains the rest.
Denim fit is read from pressure, clearance, length, and line.
Waist
Snug at first if raw, comfortable immediately if washed.
Rise
Mid or higher works better for grown men than low-rise cuts.
Thigh
Room to sit and walk without pulling the fly.
Leg
Straight or slim-straight is the safest long-term shape.
Hem
One clean cuff or a small stack, not fabric collapse.
Read the garment like a system.
The useful answer changes by garment: sometimes it is a break, sometimes clearance, sometimes cost.
Day 1 — Snug waist — Do not buy pain.
Week 2 — Waist relaxes — Thigh should already be right.
Month 3 — Knees and seat shape — Wash if needed.
Year 1 — Fades appear — Repair before holes spread.
What the bad fit is telling you.
Most fit problems announce themselves before you know the tailor's name for them.
The garment usually tells you what is wrong before the mirror does. Pulling, floating, pooling, twisting, and collapse are not styling problems.
Fly pulls
Rise or thigh is too tight.
Knee bags
Fabric recovery or fit is wrong.
Huge stacks
Inseam is too long.
Seat sag
Too much stretch or wrong size.
Fit settled, the wash question is answered in JT's denim holy trinity. Hemming and taper fall under men's alterations, and the men's fit section covers every other garment by checkpoint.
