Outerwear

Men's outerwear fit guide: coat length, sleeve room, shoulder allowance, layering clearance, collar height, overcoat fit, trench fit, and leather jacket fit.

Coat length, sleeve room, shoulder allowance, layering space, collar height, and the top layer that does not swallow the outfit.

Outerwear sits under Men › Fit in the HowTo Fashion menu.

Coat length, sleeve room, shoulder allowance, layering space, collar height, and the top layer that does not swallow the outfit.

Outerwear fit has to solve two bodies: yours and the outfit underneath. A coat that fits over a tee but fails over knitwear is not outerwear. It is a photograph.

Start with the place the garment fails first. Fit is not a vibe; it is a sequence of visible pressures, lengths, breaks, and allowances. Read the body, then decide whether the piece is worth buying, tailoring, or leaving alone.

The points that decide fit.

Use these in order. The first bad checkpoint usually explains the rest.

Outerwear fit is read from pressure, clearance, length, and line.

Shoulder

Can sit slightly wider than a jacket without collapsing.

Chest

Closes over the intended layer.

Sleeve

Covers jacket sleeve when worn as a topcoat.

Length

Covers the jacket for dress coats, hits hip for casual jackets.

Collar

Sits against the neck and frames the face.

Read the garment like a system.

The useful answer changes by garment: sometimes it is a break, sometimes clearance, sometimes cost.

Trench — Shirt + knit — Room without bulk

Overcoat — Suit or heavy knit — Must cover jacket

Field jacket — Tee to crewneck — Casual ease

Leather jacket — Tee or thin knit — Exact fit matters

What the bad fit is telling you.

Most fit problems announce themselves before you know the tailor's name for them.

The garment usually tells you what is wrong before the mirror does. Pulling, floating, pooling, twisting, and collapse are not styling problems.

Cannot close

Wrong size or wrong coat type.

Sleeves too short

Layering makes the coat look borrowed.

Collar floats

Bad neck/shoulder relationship.

Body balloons

Too much width without enough length.

Fit is easier to judge once you know which coat you need, so start with the men's outerwear build. The jacket underneath sets the clearance, which suit jacket fit explains, and sleeve shortening is covered in what a tailor can fix.
