How to Install Attic Insulation

Step-by-step guide to installing blown-in or batt attic insulation — air sealing first, proper R-value targets by climate zone, baffles, and safe handling of materials.

Time: 2 days Cost: $0.50–$1.80/sq ft Difficulty: Intermediate Permit: Not typically required

Attic insulation is one of the highest-return energy improvements in most homes. The key insight: air sealing must come before any insulation is installed. Adding insulation over a leaky ceiling plane reduces but does not eliminate thermal bypass.

R-Value Targets by Climate Zone

Zones 1–2: R-30 to R-49. Zones 3–4: R-38 to R-60. Zones 5–8: R-49 to R-60. Calculate target depth by dividing target R-value by the per-inch R-value printed on each insulation bag.

Installation Steps

Step 01 · Assess existing conditions

Measure insulation depth at five locations. Identify existing material type. Document all ceiling penetrations — recessed lights, plumbing vents, wiring, top plates, chimney chases.

Step 02 · Air seal all penetrations

Seal top plate gaps, electrical boxes, wiring chases, plumbing vents with low-expanding foam and fire-rated caulk. For non-IC-rated recessed lights, build metal or rigid-foam dams before blowing. Do not foam within 2 inches of flue pipes — use metal flashing and fire-rated caulk only.

Step 03 · Install rafter baffles at all eave bays

One baffle per rafter bay at every eave. Slide each baffle up until its lower end passes the top plate. Staple to rafters. Seal edges. Without baffles, insulation blocks soffit ventilation.

Step 04 · Build depth marker stakes

Cut 12-inch stakes from 1x2 lumber and mark the target depth in inches. Drive into joist bays at 6-foot intervals across the attic floor.

Step 05 · Position and load the blower

Set the rental blower outside. Run the hose through a window or access hatch. Establish a communication signal with your helper for "more" and "stop." Load bags continuously.

Step 06 · Blow insulation from the far corners toward the hatch

Hold the hose 2–3 feet above the surface and sweep in arcs. Maintain 3 inches of clearance from eave baffles. Check depth stakes frequently.

Step 07 · Handle the attic hatch area

Build a 2x4 dam around the hatch opening to prevent material from falling through. Fill the dam interior by hand. Adhere rigid foam to the top face of the hatch door.

Step 08 · Install batt insulation (batt method alternative)

Fit unfaced batts snugly between joists without compression. Lay the top layer perpendicular to the joists and perpendicular to any existing layer. Use unfaced batts for all top layers.

Step 09 · Verify final depth

Check depth at 20 random locations. Fill all low spots. Label the hatch with the installed R-value and installation date.

Step 10 · Restore access and clean up

Remove the blower hose carefully. Return the blower and any unopened sealed bags. Reinstall the attic hatch cover with weatherstripping intact.

Non-IC recessed lights: Covering a non-IC-rated fixture can with insulation creates a fire risk. Identify all non-IC cans and build air-barrier dams before blowing. Confirm by looking for the "IC" label stamped on the housing or junction box.

After Installation

Blown cellulose settles approximately 20% over time — install 20% deeper than the target R-value depth. Inspect every 5–10 years for moisture damage or pest activity.
