A Guide to Root Touch-Ups at Home

A clean sectioning of hair roots.

Maintaining consistent hair colour requires a methodical approach to the root line. When the natural pigment begins to emerge, the goal is to deposit pigment only on the regrowth to avoid overlapping or bands of excess colour.

This method utilizes temporary, washout pigment sprays or powder compacts. It does not replace permanent chemical coloring, but rather extends the time between professional appointments.

Ingredients

  • Iron Oxides: Used to provide temporary, surface-level pigment
  • Silica: Provides a matte finish that mimics natural hair texture

Tools List

  • Tail comb
  • Temporary root pigment
  • Blending brush
  • Dark towel

Step by step

  1. 0:00 to 0:05

    Prepare a clean sectioning

Wash and dry your hair completely before beginning. Moisture will prevent even adherence of the pigment. Use a tail comb to create a straight center part and pull the remaining hair back into a secure, low ponytail to keep it clear of the application area.

Tip: Cover your shoulders with a dark towel to protect clothing.
  2. 0:05 to 0:15

    Apply the pigment

Hold the spray canister six inches from the head or use the applicator brush for powders. Apply the pigment in short, light bursts along the visible root line. Move steadily from the hairline toward the crown, focusing only on the areas where the natural shade is visible.

Tip: Less is more; it is easier to add product than to remove it.
  3. 0:15 to 0:20

    Blend the pigment

Use a clean, dense-bristled brush to gently buff the pigment into the roots. This motion softens any harsh lines where the product meets the pre-coloured hair. Ensure you do not drag the pigment down the hair shaft further than necessary.

Tip: Use a light hand to prevent smudging on the scalp.
  4. 0:20 to 0:25

    Set the finish

Wait for the pigment to dry completely, which usually takes several minutes. Once dry, run a wide-tooth comb through the roots to loosen any stuck hair fibers. If using a spray, a light mist of setting spray can ensure the pigment remains in place until the next wash.

Tip: Avoid touching the roots until the product is fully set.

Trouble

The product transferred to my skin

Gently wipe the area with a damp cloth or a cotton swab dipped in mild soap. Avoid aggressive scrubbing to prevent irritation.

The colour looks too flat

Apply a second, lighter layer only to the most visible grey strands. Build the colour slowly to maintain natural dimension.

The spray feels sticky

This indicates too much product was applied. Gently brush through with a clean comb to redistribute the pigment.

My hair feels weighed down

You are likely using too much product. On your next attempt, hold the canister further away from your scalp to ensure a lighter mist.

Precision in application ensures the regrowth is masked without compromising the health of your hair.
Temporary products are the only safe way to bridge the gap between professional salon visits.
