Heatless Curls, Start to Finish
A decision made at 10pm about how Tuesday will look. Hair holds a shape because of hydrogen bonds. They break when hair gets wet and reform as it dries.

Six steps Four products Twice a week at most 12 min at night, 2 in the morning
Dry to eighty percent
The step with no product attached, and the one that decides the outcome. Hydrogen bonds break when hair is wet and reform as it dries into whatever shape it is held in. Wrap it dripping and it is still drying at four in the morning; wrap it bone dry and there is nothing to set. Cool and slightly heavy to the back of the hand is right.

Leave-in, bottom two-thirds
Slip so the hair wraps without snagging, and a slightly slower dry so the bonds settle rather than snap into place. Raked through with fingers, never a brush, and nothing above the ear. Leave-in near the root flattens exactly the part of the curl that needs lift. Cream over spray — a spray puts water back into hair you just spent forty minutes drying.
Product Leave-in conditionerSalt spray at the mid-lengths
Salt roughens the cuticle slightly so strands grip each other, and that grip is what stops the wave falling out by lunch. It is also what turns hair into a beach towel, and the window between the two is narrow. Four to six sprays from a foot away, one scrunch. Halve it on coloured hair, skip it entirely on thick hair.
Product Sea salt sprayWrap away from the face
Ribbon across the head like a headband, then wrap the front section away from your face and recruit hair as you travel down. Away from the face is not a style note — wrapped the other way, the front falls forward all day. Leave the last two inches out or the ends hook up like a hot roller, which defeats the point.
Product Heatless curl setSleep on silk
The first four hours survive anything. The last three are the ones that decide the morning, because by then the hair is dry, the set is holding, and friction is the only thing left that can damage it. Cotton at three in the morning is a woven abrasive, and the damage shows up as frizz across the top of the head.
Product Silk pillowcaseUnwind, then leave it alone
Let each section fall rather than pulling it free, then do nothing for ten minutes. Every pass of a hand through a fresh set costs you roughly an hour of hold at the other end of the day. After ten minutes: tip forward, shake once from the root, separate two pieces at the front. That is the whole morning.
