Step by step
Select a color palette
Choose two base colors (like black and navy) and one accent color. Every top must match every bottom so you don't waste space on single-outfit items.
Follow the 5-4-3-2-1 rule
Pack 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 pairs of socks/underwear (and wash them in the sink), 2 pairs of shoes (one on your feet, one in the bag), and 1 accessory (a hat or scarf).
Use compression packing cubes
Fold your clothes flat or use the Ranger Roll method, then place them into compression cubes. Zip the compression zipper to reduce the volume of the cube by 30-40%.
Minimize toiletries
Do not pack full-sized bottles. Use 3-ounce silicone travel tubes or solid bars (shampoo, soap, deodorant) to bypass liquid restrictions and save space.
Wear your heavy gear
Wear your heaviest boots and your largest coat on the flight. This frees up the internal volume of your carry-on for gear that is harder to replace.
Budget
| Estimate | Zero dollars extra if you own a 40L bag, or $150-$250 for a high-quality carry-on suitcase or backpack if you are starting from scratch. |

Visa & entry notes
Packing light doesn't change your entry requirements, but it makes navigating customs and public transit significantly faster. Always keep your passport and printed visa documents in an easy-to-access external pocket of your bag.
Check the limits before you pack
Carry-on rules are set by each airline, and they differ on size, weight and whether a personal item is allowed on top. Check the limits for every airline on your itinerary, including any short connection on a smaller carrier, and pack to the strictest one. A soft bag that fits the gate sizer without forcing is safer than a rigid case that only fits when empty.
Do a test pack
Pack the bag completely a few days before you leave, then carry it around the house or up a flight of stairs. If it is heavy or hard to close now, it will be worse after a week of small purchases. Take out anything you hesitated over; the 5-4-3-2-1 list already covers the essentials.
What goes in the personal item
Carry-on bags are sometimes checked at the gate when the overhead bins fill up, so keep anything you can't be without in the smaller bag under the seat: medication, passport and documents, phone, chargers, keys and a change of underwear.
Plan the laundry
Two weeks from one bag only works if you wash as you go. Decide roughly when you will do laundry, check whether your accommodation has a machine, and bring a few detergent sheets for sink washes in between. Quick-dry fabrics make drying overnight realistic.
FAQ
What if I run out of clean clothes?
Plan to do laundry once at the one-week mark. Most hotels or hostels offer laundry services, or you can use a sink with travel-sized detergent sheets.
Does my personal item count as part of the carry-on?
Usually no, but airlines have strict size limits for personal items (typically 18x14x8 inches). Put your electronics and liquids in the personal item to keep your main bag light.
For the smaller bag, Zoe's personal-item-only packing list shows how far the same idea can go, and carry-on liquids without the bag-check gamble covers the toiletry rules in detail. For a much longer trip on one bag, read pack once, travel eight weeks.
