Smart home hub app, stable Wi-Fi connection

Step by step

  1. 1 min

Identify duplicate or generic device names

Open your primary smart home management application. Review the device list for names like 'Light 1' or 'Bulb A' that provide no context for your voice assistant.

  2. 1 min

    Adopt a consistent naming convention

Standardize your naming format to [Room Name] + [Device Type/Feature]. Use simple, phonetically distinct words to ensure the voice assistant processes the command accurately.

Note: Example: Use 'Living Room Main' instead of 'Light_01_LivingRoom'.
  3. 2 min

Rename devices within the manufacturer app

Navigate to the device settings menu within the specific bulb manufacturer's application. Select the 'Name' field, enter your new identifier, and save the changes.

Note: Changes made in the native app typically sync to third-party integrations automatically.
  4. 1 min

Update names in the primary voice controller

If the name does not update in HomeKit, Google Home, or Alexa, navigate to the device settings within that respective app. Manually override the display name to match your new convention.

  5. 30 sec

Test the new labels with a voice command

Trigger your voice assistant using the new name. Issue a specific command such as 'Set [Room] [Device] to 50 percent' to confirm the assistant acknowledges the change.

Note: If the assistant reports that multiple devices share a name, check for hidden 'ghost' devices in your app list.
