How to Verify Thermostat Wiring Before Smart Thermostat Installation

Screwdriver, smartphone camera, electrical tape, flashlight

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Power down the HVAC system

Locate your furnace or air handler and turn off the power switch. Alternatively, flip the corresponding circuit breaker in your electrical panel to the Off position to prevent electrical shorts during inspection.

Note: Verify the system is off by attempting to adjust the current thermostat; the display should be blank.
  2. 1 min

    Remove the thermostat cover

Gently pull the thermostat faceplate off the wall mount. If it is secured by screws, use a screwdriver to remove the fasteners before pulling the unit away from the backplate to expose the terminals.

Note: Do not disconnect any wires during this phase.
  3. 1 min

    Photograph the wiring configuration

Capture a clear, high-resolution photo of the current wire-to-terminal connections. Ensure the terminal labels (e.g., R, W, Y, G, C) are legible in the image.

Note: Use this photo as a reference if you need to revert to your old thermostat.
  4. 1 min

    Identify the Common (C) wire

Inspect the terminal block for a wire connected to the C terminal. This wire provides constant power to smart thermostats; if no wire is connected to C, check if there is an unused wire tucked inside the wall cavity.

Note: Without a C-wire or a power adapter kit, most smart thermostats will not function.
  5. 1 min

    Document wire colors and terminals

Create a list mapping each wire color to its corresponding terminal label. Standard configurations include Red (R/Rh/Rc), Yellow (Y), Green (G), White (W), and Blue or Black (C).

Note: Wire colors are not standardized; rely strictly on the terminal labels on your current unit.
  6. 1 min

    Reattach the thermostat cover

Press the thermostat faceplate back onto the wall mount until it clicks or is secured by its screws. Restore power to your HVAC system at the breaker or furnace switch to resume operation.

Note: Ensure no wires were pinched during the reattachment process.
