You will need
Old Mac, New Mac, Reliable Wi-Fi network, Power adapters for both machines

Step by step

  1. 2 min

    Update both Macs

Ensure both the source and target Macs are running the latest version of macOS. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update on both machines to confirm no pending updates remain.

Note: A mismatch in macOS versions can cause compatibility errors during the transfer.
  2. 1 min

    Establish the network

Connect both Macs to the same local network. For the fastest transfer speeds, use a Thunderbolt or Ethernet cable to connect the two devices directly.

Note: Direct physical connection significantly reduces transfer time for large data sets.
  3. 1 min

    Open Migration Assistant

On both Macs, open Migration Assistant. You can find this by pressing Command + Space, typing 'Migration Assistant', and pressing Return, or by navigating to Applications > Utilities.

Note: Ensure both devices remain plugged into power during the entire process.
  4. 2 min

    Set the transfer direction

On your new Mac, select 'From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or Startup disk' and click Continue. On your old Mac, select 'To another Mac' when prompted.

  5. 1 min

    Confirm the security code

A security code will appear on both screens. Verify that the codes match, then click Continue on your old Mac to initiate the pairing process.

  6. 2 min

    Choose your migration data

Select the information you wish to move from your old Mac to the new one, including Applications, User folders, and System settings. Review the total storage requirement and click Continue to begin.

Note: The estimated time remaining will appear once the migration initiates.
  7. 1 min

    Finalize the setup

Once the progress bar reaches completion, click Done. Log in to your user account on the new Mac to verify that all applications and files have migrated successfully.

Note: Some apps may require you to re-authenticate with your Apple ID or other credentials upon first launch.
