Verify your ChatGPT subscription
Confirm you have an active ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Team subscription. PDF uploads are not available on the free tier. Check your subscription status by clicking your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of the ChatGPT interface.
Note: If you're on ChatGPT Enterprise, PDF uploads are also supported with higher file size limits.Start a new conversation
Open ChatGPT and click 'New chat' in the sidebar or press Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+O (Mac). This ensures you're starting fresh without any previous context that might interfere with your PDF analysis.
Note: Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows) / Cmd+Shift+O (Mac)Locate the attachment button
Look for the paperclip icon (📎) to the left of the message input box at the bottom of the screen. This attachment button appears only when you have an active Plus subscription and are in a compatible chat mode.
Note: If you don't see the paperclip icon, refresh the page or switch to GPT-4 model from the model selector at the top of the chat.Click the attachment button and select your PDF
Click the paperclip icon to open the file picker. Navigate to your PDF file and select it. ChatGPT accepts PDF files up to 512MB in size. The upload progress will display as a loading bar.
Note: For faster uploads, ensure your PDF is optimized. Scanned documents work but take longer to process than text-based PDFs.Wait for processing confirmation
ChatGPT will display a preview thumbnail of your PDF once uploaded successfully. You'll see the filename and a small preview image. The system automatically extracts and processes the text content from your document.
Note: If the PDF contains images or charts, ChatGPT can analyze those visual elements as well when you ask specific questions about them.Ask questions about your PDF
Type your question or request about the PDF content in the message box and press Enter. You can ask for summaries, specific information extraction, analysis, or any other task related to the document content.
Note: Start with broad questions like 'Summarize this document' or 'What are the key points?' before diving into specific details.
