Step by step
Find your router's IP address
Open Command Prompt on Windows (press Windows + R, type cmd) or Terminal on Mac (press Cmd + Space, type Terminal). Type 'ipconfig' on Windows or 'route -n get default | grep gateway' on Mac. Look for the Default Gateway address, typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Note: Write down this IP address — you'll need it to access your router settings.Access your router's admin panel
Open any web browser and enter your router's IP address in the address bar. Press Enter to load the login page. You'll see a username and password prompt for router access.
Note: If the page doesn't load, ensure you're connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to modify.Log in with admin credentials
Enter your router's admin username and password. Default credentials are often printed on a sticker on your router (look for 'admin' username with a password like 'admin' or 'password'). If you've changed these before, use your custom credentials.
Note: Common default combinations include admin/admin, admin/password, or admin with no password.Navigate to wireless security settings
Look for sections labeled 'Wireless', 'Wi-Fi Settings', 'WLAN', or 'Wireless Security' in the main menu. Click on this section to expand wireless configuration options. Different router brands place this in different menu locations.
Locate the password field
Find the field labeled 'Password', 'Passphrase', 'Network Key', or 'PSK'. This field contains your current Wi-Fi password, which may appear as dots or asterisks for security.
Note: Some routers have a 'Show Password' checkbox to reveal the current password in plain text.Enter your new password
Delete the existing password and type your new one. Use a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Make it at least 12 characters long for strong security.
Note: Avoid personal information, dictionary words, or common patterns like '123456789' in your password.Save the changes
Click 'Save', 'Apply', or 'Update Settings' to confirm your new password. Your router will restart or apply the changes, which takes 30-60 seconds. The admin panel may refresh automatically.
Note: Write down your new password before saving — you'll need it to reconnect all your devices.Reconnect your devices
Your devices will disconnect from Wi-Fi when the password changes. Go to Wi-Fi settings on each device, select your network, and enter the new password to reconnect.
Note: Start with the device you used to change the password, then update phones, tablets, smart home devices, and computers.
