Step by step
Choose your privacy browser
Download Firefox, Brave, or Tor Browser from their official websites. Firefox offers strong privacy controls with customization options. Brave blocks ads and trackers by default while supporting cryptocurrency rewards. Tor provides maximum anonymity by routing traffic through multiple encrypted servers.
Note: Avoid downloading browsers from third-party sites to prevent malware or modified versions.Configure tracking protection settings
Open your browser settings and navigate to Privacy & Security. In Firefox, set Tracking Protection to Strict mode. In Brave, enable Shields and set them to Aggressive blocking. Enable fingerprinting protection and disable telemetry data collection in all browsers.
Note: Strict privacy settings may break some websites. Create exceptions for trusted sites rather than lowering global protection.Disable location and camera permissions
Navigate to Site Permissions in your browser settings. Block location access, camera access, microphone access, and notifications by default. Set these to Ask before accessing rather than allowing automatic permissions. Remove permissions from sites that previously had access.
Note: Review existing site permissions monthly and revoke access for sites you no longer use.Configure search engine settings
Change your default search engine to DuckDuckGo, Startpage, or Searx in browser settings. These search engines do not track queries or store personal data. Remove Google, Bing, and Yahoo from your search engine list to avoid accidental use.
Note: Use different search engines for different needs. DuckDuckGo for general searches, Startpage for Google results without tracking.Install essential privacy extensions
Add uBlock Origin for advanced ad and tracker blocking. Install ClearURLs to remove tracking parameters from links. Add Decentraleyes to protect against content delivery network tracking. Avoid installing too many extensions as they can create unique fingerprints.
Note: Test extensions on a secondary browser profile first to ensure they do not break your frequently used websites.Set up secure DNS
Navigate to Network Settings in your browser and enable DNS over HTTPS. Choose Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Quad9 (9.9.9.9) as your DNS provider. This encrypts DNS queries and prevents your internet provider from seeing which websites you visit.
Note: Some VPNs provide their own secure DNS. Use your VPN's DNS when connected to avoid conflicts.Enable private browsing by default
Set your browser to always open in private or incognito mode. This prevents local storage of browsing history, cookies, and temporary files. Configure your browser to clear all data when closing sessions. Use separate browser profiles for different activities.
Note: Bookmark important sites since private browsing does not save browsing history for easy access later.
