Step by step
Reset the desktop theme to default
Open the Settings app by pressing Win + I. Navigate to Personalization in the left sidebar and select Themes. Choose the Windows (light) or Windows (dark) theme under the Current theme section to revert all colors, sounds, and cursor customizations to factory settings.
Note: This will remove custom wallpapers and accent color schemes.Revert taskbar alignment and behaviors
In Settings, navigate to Personalization > Taskbar. Click Taskbar behaviors and set Taskbar alignment to Left. Ensure all unnecessary pinned icons are removed by right-clicking them and selecting Unpin from taskbar.
Note: Windows 11 defaults to center alignment; changing this to left mimics classic Windows workflows.Disable custom accent colors
Navigate to Personalization > Colors. Locate Accent color and switch it to Automatic. Toggle off Show accent color on Start and taskbar and Show accent color on title bars and windows borders to clear all custom color profiles.
Note: Automatic selection bases colors on your current desktop wallpaper.Clear custom lock screen settings
Go to Personalization > Lock screen. Change the Personalize your lock screen dropdown to Windows spotlight to reset the background behavior. Remove any custom apps under Lock screen status to clear third-party data overlays from the lock screen.
Note: Windows spotlight updates your lock screen with images provided by Microsoft.Delete cached user profile customizations
Open Run by pressing Win + R, type netplwiz, and press Enter. If you suspect deeper corruption, creating a new local administrator account via Add will provide a clean registry hive and fresh personalization defaults. Migrate your data to the new account and delete the previous corrupted profile.
Note: Back up all personal data before deleting a user account.
