Active Wi-Fi connection, Bluetooth enabled on both devices

Step by step

  1. 1 min

Enable Near Share in Windows Settings

Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I. Navigate to System and select Nearby sharing. Set the preference to Everyone nearby to ensure your PC is discoverable by other devices.

Note: Ensure both devices are on the same local network for maximum transfer speeds.
  2. 1 min

Initiate a file transfer via File Explorer

Right-click the file you intend to send in File Explorer. Select the Share icon from the context menu to open the Windows sharing window. Choose your target device from the list that appears under Nearby share.

  3. 30 sec

Accept the incoming file on the receiving device

Look for a notification banner on the target device. Click Save or Save & Open to complete the transfer. The file will be stored in your Downloads folder by default.

  4. 1 min

    Verify Bluetooth and Network profiles

Ensure your network profile is set to Private rather than Public in Settings under Network & internet. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in the Action Center to reset the pairing handshake.

Note: Public network profiles often block discovery protocols for security reasons.
  5. 1 min

Utilize Microsoft Phone Link for mobile synchronization

If you are transferring files from a mobile device, install Phone Link on Windows. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions to link your mobile device via QR code. Use the Photos or Files tab within the app to drag and drop content directly to your desktop.

Note: This provides a permanent bridge between your mobile device and Windows, unlike the ad-hoc nature of AirDrop.
