Step by step
Attempt to terminate the active application
Press Alt + F4 on your keyboard. If the window is hung but the interface remains active, this command sends a close signal to the foreground process.
Note: If the window does not close within 5 seconds, move to the Task Manager.Open the Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously. This bypasses the standard Ctrl + Alt + Delete menu to open the Task Manager directly in the foreground.
Note: Ctrl + Shift + EscIdentify and end the non-responsive process
Locate the application marked as (Not Responding) in the Processes tab. Select the process, right-click, and select End task. If the system is too sluggish to click, highlight the process and press the Delete key.
Note: Avoid ending processes under the Windows Processes category unless you are certain they are the cause of the freeze.Restart the Windows Explorer shell
If the taskbar or desktop icons are frozen, locate Windows Explorer in the Processes list. Right-click the entry and select Restart. This refreshes the Windows shell without requiring a full system reboot.
Note: Your taskbar and desktop icons will briefly disappear and reappear.Perform a hardware power cycle
If the system remains entirely unresponsive to keyboard input, hold the physical power button on your computer case for 10 full seconds. Once the system powers off completely, wait 5 seconds before pressing the button again to cold boot.
Note: This is a last resort to avoid data loss.
