How to Isolate Smart Home Devices on a Guest Wi-Fi Network
- Difficulty
- Intermediate
- Tested on
- Wi-Fi 7 Router - Firmware v1.2
- You will need
- Access to router administrative dashboard, mobile app for smart devices
Step by step
Log into your router administration panel
Open a web browser on a device connected to your main network. Enter the router's IP address (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into the address bar and provide your administrative credentials.
Note: Refer to the sticker on your router chassis if you have forgotten your default login credentials.Activate the Guest Network feature
Navigate to the Wireless or Wi-Fi Settings section of your dashboard. Locate the Guest Network tab, toggle the status to Enabled, and assign a unique SSID name for your IoT devices.
Note: Use WPA3 security protocol if your router and devices support it.Enable AP Isolation
Look for a setting labeled AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or Guest Network Isolation. Ensure this is enabled to prevent devices on the guest network from communicating with each other or with your private network resources.
Note: Some smart hubs require communication with your main network to function; verify your hub requirements before enabling strict isolation.Reset and reconnect your smart devices
Put your smart devices into pairing mode according to the manufacturer instructions. Connect your mobile phone to the new Guest Wi-Fi network and use your smart home app to re-add the devices to this specific network.
Note: Ensure your phone is joined to the 2.4GHz band of the guest network, as most IoT devices do not support 5GHz.Test device connectivity
Launch your smart home application and confirm that all devices appear as online. Attempt to toggle a light or sensor to verify the command path is functioning through the isolated network.
