Step by step
Disable power to the HVAC system
Locate your home circuit breaker panel and switch off the breaker controlling your furnace and air conditioning unit. Verify the power is off by attempting to adjust the temperature on your current thermostat; if the display remains off and the system does not engage, proceed.
Note: Use a non-contact voltage tester on the wiring behind the thermostat faceplate to confirm zero electrical current.Photograph existing wiring
Remove the faceplate of the existing thermostat to expose the wiring terminals. Before disconnecting any wires, take a clear, high-resolution photograph of the wire colors and their corresponding terminal labels for reference.
Note: Label each wire with provided adhesive tags if your new thermostat kit includes them.Mount the smart thermostat base
Disconnect the wires from the old base plate and remove the unit from the wall. Align the new smart thermostat backplate, ensuring it is level, and secure it to the wall using the provided mounting screws and anchors.
Note: Use a trim plate if the new thermostat is smaller than the hole left by the previous device.Connect terminal wires
Insert each wire into the corresponding terminal on the new backplate. Ensure each wire clicks into place or is secured by the terminal lever, confirming there is no exposed copper outside of the connector.
Note: If you lack a C-wire for continuous power, you may need a power extender kit installed at your furnace control board.Attach display and restore power
Snap the thermostat display unit onto the mounted base plate. Return to your circuit breaker panel and switch the HVAC power back to the ON position.
Note: Most modern thermostats will immediately illuminate and initiate a startup sequence.Sync with the mobile application
Download the manufacturer's dedicated application on your smartphone. Follow the in-app instructions to scan the device QR code, connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and complete the hardware calibration.
Note: Ensure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you intend to use for the thermostat during the initial pairing process.
