Maintaining Power Continuity for Smart Light Bulbs

You will need
Smart light bulbs, switch cover plates, zigbee-compatible smart remote, adhesive putty

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Disable physical switch utility

The primary cause of smart bulb offline status is the toggle switch cutting the circuit. Switch the bulb to the On position and accept that the physical switch must remain in this state permanently to provide power to the bulb's internal radio.

  2. 2 min

    Apply a physical switch guard

Install a rigid plastic toggle or rocker switch guard over the wall switch. These devices screw into existing faceplate holes or use adhesive to create a barrier that prevents accidental downward movement of the switch lever.

Note: Ensure the guard does not obstruct the ability to cycle power manually during a network reset.
  3. 3 min

    Mount a wireless smart remote

Place a battery-operated smart remote, such as a dial or button controller, directly over the existing switch or on an adjacent flat surface. Pair this device with your smart home hub to control the bulbs via software triggers rather than electrical circuits.

Note: Magnetic mounts allow for easy removal to change batteries.
  4. 2 min

Map remote commands in the app

Open your smart home application and navigate to the Devices tab. Select your newly added remote and assign specific scenes, brightness levels, or power toggles to the physical buttons on the hardware remote.

  5. 1 min

    Perform a continuity test

Turn off the smart bulbs using the newly installed wireless remote. Check that the bulbs remain discoverable in your smart home app, confirming they are still receiving power despite the lights being turned off electronically.

Note: If a bulb shows as 'Unreachable', verify the wall switch is fully locked in the On position.
