How to Reconnect Smart Home Devices After Changing Wi-Fi

Difficulty
Intermediate
Tested on
iOS 18.4 - iPhone 15 Pro
You will need
Smartphone with manufacturer apps installed, new Wi-Fi credentials, 2.4GHz network access

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Confirm network frequency compatibility

Ensure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz network. Most smart home devices do not support 5GHz or 6GHz bands for the initial handshake.

Note: Temporarily disable 5GHz in your router settings if devices fail to detect the network.
  2. 2 min

Reset the smart device to pairing mode

Locate the physical reset button on your device. Hold the button for 5 to 10 seconds until the status indicator light flashes rapidly, indicating the device has cleared its previous network cache.

Note: Refer to the manufacturer manual for specific reset blink codes.
  3. 2 min

Delete the offline device in the app

Open the manufacturer app (e.g., Hue, Kasa, Tuya). Select the device marked as offline, open Settings, and select Remove or Delete Device to clear the broken configuration.

Note: Deleting the device is necessary to prevent ID conflicts during re-pairing.
  4. 2 min

    Initiate new device discovery

Tap the Add Device or plus (+) icon in your smart home application. Follow the on-screen prompts to discover the device that is now flashing in pairing mode.

Note: Ensure your smartphone is connected to the same 2.4GHz network during this process.
  5. 1 min

    Authenticate with new Wi-Fi credentials

Select your new Wi-Fi network from the list provided by the app. Enter the new network password carefully and confirm to push the credentials to the smart device.

Note: Double-check password capitalization as errors here will result in a connection timeout.
