Use the lock keyboard shortcut
Press Control-Command-Q simultaneously to lock your Mac immediately. This returns you to the login screen while keeping your applications and processes running in the background.
Note: This is the fastest method to secure your desktop when walking away from your machine.Configure Hot Corners for one-click locking
Navigate to System Settings, select Desktop & Dock, and click the Hot Corners button at the bottom of the list. Assign Lock Screen to one of the four corners in the dropdown menu and click Done.
Note: Moving your cursor to the assigned corner now triggers the lock screen instantly.Enable Touch ID for quick unlocking
Go to System Settings, select Touch ID & Password, and ensure Use Touch ID for unlocking your Mac is toggled on. This allows you to re-access your system immediately after locking.
Note: Always maintain a strong login password to ensure security even with Touch ID enabled.Add the Lock Screen icon to your menu bar
Open Control Center within System Settings and locate the Lock Screen option. Select Show in Menu Bar to place a dedicated lock icon in your top menu bar for manual activation.
Note: Clicking this icon provides a visual, mouse-driven alternative to keyboard shortcuts.Require a password immediately after locking
Navigate to System Settings, select Lock Screen, and set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to Immediately. This ensures your Mac is fully secured the moment you lock it.
Note: Failure to set this to 'Immediately' creates a window of vulnerability before the system locks.
