- You will need
- External storage drive with capacity larger than your Mac's internal disk, USB-C or Thunderbolt cable
Step by step
Connect the external storage device
Plug your external hard drive or SSD directly into your Mac. Use the fastest available port, such as Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C, to ensure optimal transfer speeds during the initial backup.
Note: Avoid using a USB hub; connect the drive directly to the Mac for better reliability.Open Time Machine settings
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings. Navigate to General in the sidebar, then click on Time Machine.
Add the backup disk
Click the Add Backup Disk button, or the plus (+) icon if you have existing backups. Select your external drive from the list of available devices and click Set Up Disk.
Note: If the drive is not formatted for Mac, the system will prompt you to erase it. This will permanently delete all data currently on the external drive.Enable disk encryption
Select the option to Encrypt Backup to ensure your data remains secure. Enter a strong password when prompted, as you will need this key to restore your files if the original drive is lost or damaged.
Note: If you forget this password, the data on the backup drive cannot be recovered.Initiate the backup
Time Machine will automatically begin the first backup shortly after configuration. If it does not start, click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and select Back Up Now.
Confirm backup completion
Monitor the progress via the Time Machine settings menu. Once the status indicates the backup is finished, the drive is ready, and you may safely proceed with your software installation.
Note: The initial backup may take several hours depending on the volume of your data.
