Step by step

  1. 1 min

Verify Apple ID and connectivity requirements

Ensure both the Mac and iPad are signed into the identical Apple ID using two-factor authentication. Confirm that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff are enabled on both devices. On the Mac, navigate to System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff and toggle Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices to On.

Note: Both devices must be within 30 feet of each other.
  2. 1 min

    Adjust Universal Control display settings

On your Mac, go to System Settings > Displays. Click the Advanced button. Ensure the options for Pushing through the edge of a display to connect a nearby Mac or iPad and Automatically reconnect to any nearby Mac or iPad are enabled.

  3. 1 min

    Check iPadOS system requirements

On your iPad, navigate to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff. Verify that the Cursor and Keyboard toggle is set to On. If the toggle is missing, confirm your iPad model supports Universal Control and is updated to the latest firmware.

Note: Restart the iPad if the toggle remains unresponsive after activation.
  4. 1 min

    Refresh Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules

Toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off on both devices, wait ten seconds, and toggle them back on. This clears the local connection handshake. If using a secondary display, disconnect it temporarily to rule out interference with the arrangement mapping.

  5. 1 min

    Re-establish display arrangement

In Mac System Settings > Displays, verify that the iPad icon appears next to your Mac display. Drag the iPad icon to match its physical position relative to your Mac. If the iPad icon is missing, select the plus (+) icon to manually add the iPad as a display.

Note: Ensure your iPad is not currently using Sidecar.
  6. 1 min

    Perform a forced configuration reset

If functionality fails, sign out of your Apple ID on the Mac, restart, and sign back in. This forces a refresh of your trusted device security certificates, which often resolves latent connectivity handshake errors.

Note: You will need to re-enable Find My and iCloud Keychain after this step.
