Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Check Bluetooth status and visibility

Click the Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Verify Bluetooth is turned on and your Mac is discoverable. If the Bluetooth option is missing or grayed out, note this for hardware troubleshooting. Ensure your target device is in pairing mode and within 30 feet.

Note: Hold Option while clicking the Bluetooth menu bar icon to see additional diagnostic information including hardware addresses and connection details.
  2. 2 min

    Reset the Bluetooth module

Hold Shift + Option and click the Bluetooth menu bar icon. Select "Reset the Bluetooth module" from the debug menu. Click "OK" to confirm the reset. Your Mac will restart the Bluetooth service and clear temporary connection data.

Note: If the debug menu doesn't appear, enable it first in System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced > Show Bluetooth in menu bar.
  3. 2 min

    Delete Bluetooth preference files

Quit System Preferences completely. Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G. Type ~/Library/Preferences and press Enter. Delete com.apple.Bluetooth.plist if it exists. Empty the Trash and restart your Mac to rebuild the Bluetooth configuration.

Note: Back up the preference file before deletion by copying it to your Desktop in case you need to restore previous settings.
  4. 2 min

    Clear the Bluetooth cache

Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities. Type sudo rm -rf /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and press Enter. Enter your administrator password when prompted. This removes system-level Bluetooth preferences that may be corrupted.

Note: Also clear device-specific caches with sudo rm -rf /var/folders/*/*/*/com.apple.Bluetooth* but be prepared to re-pair all devices.
  5. 3 min

    Reset SMC and PRAM

Shut down your Mac completely. For Intel Macs, press and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side plus the power button for 10 seconds. For M1/M2 Macs, simply restart and continue to the next step. After starting up, immediately hold Command + Option + P + R until you hear the startup sound twice.

Note: SMC reset fixes power-related Bluetooth issues while PRAM reset clears hardware settings that might interfere with wireless modules.
  6. 3 min

    Remove and re-add problematic devices

Open System Preferences > Bluetooth. Find devices showing as "Not Connected" or "Paired" but not working. Click the X next to each device and select "Remove". Put your device in pairing mode and click "Set Up New Device" to establish a fresh connection.

Note: Before removing, note any custom settings like mouse acceleration or keyboard shortcuts as these will be reset to defaults.
  7. 2 min

Check for interference and update macOS

Move away from WiFi routers, microwaves, and other 2.4GHz devices that can interfere with Bluetooth. Open System Preferences > Software Update and install any pending macOS updates. Restart after updating and test Bluetooth connectivity with your devices.

Note: Use WiFi on 5GHz bands when possible to reduce interference, and keep Bluetooth devices within 10 feet during initial pairing for strongest signal.
