Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Identify your primary objective

Restore from a backup if your goal is to transition your data, settings, and apps to a new device or recover a stable state after an update failure. Choose a clean setup if you are experiencing persistent software glitches, battery drain, or storage anomalies that suggest corrupted system files within your current backup.

Note: A clean setup eliminates residual configuration errors that often migrate through backups.
  2. 5 min

    Secure your current data

Before proceeding, perform a full backup to iCloud or your computer. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now to ensure your contacts, photos, and messages are preserved regardless of which installation path you select.

Note: Even if you choose a clean setup, a backup serves as a safety net for manual data retrieval.
  3. 2 min

    Erase all device content

To initiate either process, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Authenticate with your Apple ID and passcode to initiate the wipe process, which returns the device to its original out-of-box software state.

Note: Ensure Find My is disabled before the device restarts to bypass Activation Lock.
  4. 1 min

    Select the configuration method

Once the device restarts to the Hello screen, follow the prompts until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Select Restore from iCloud Backup or Restore from Mac/PC to keep your existing ecosystem, or choose Don't Transfer Apps & Data to proceed with a clean, factory-fresh setup.

Note: Selecting Don't Transfer Apps & Data is mandatory if you suspect deep-level system corruption.
  5. 10 min

    Complete the software initialization

Follow the on-screen instructions to sign in with your Apple ID, configure Face ID, and enable core services like Siri and Location Services. If performing a clean setup, you must manually redownload applications from the App Store and re-authenticate your accounts, ensuring only necessary data is reintroduced.

Note: Avoid restoring individual system settings if you are attempting to isolate a specific performance bug.
