Step by step
Enable iCloud Photos on the source device
Navigate to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos. Ensure the toggle for Sync this iPhone is set to On. This ensures your entire library is unified before the transfer process begins.
Note: Avoid using Quick Start if you have significant pre-existing data on the destination phone, as this often triggers duplicate synchronization errors.Confirm iCloud synchronization status
Open the Photos app and scroll to the bottom of the Library tab. Ensure the status indicates that your photos are fully synced with iCloud. If the status says 'Uploading' or 'Syncing', wait for completion to prevent mismatched metadata.
Note: Ensure your device is connected to power during this final synchronization.Reset the destination iPhone
If the destination iPhone has already been set up, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings. Starting from the Hello screen is the only way to guarantee a clean sync without file collision.
Note: Back up any existing data on the new device before performing this reset.Restore via iCloud during setup
Follow the on-screen prompts until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Select 'Restore from iCloud Backup' and sign in with your Apple ID. Choose the most recent backup generated from your previous device to initiate the library restore.
Verify iCloud Photos settings on the new device
Once the setup completes, navigate to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos. Confirm that iCloud Photos is enabled. The device will now pull your existing metadata structure, which prevents the creation of duplicate library entries.
Note: Allow the device to remain plugged in overnight to complete the background indexing of your full-resolution images.
