How to Fix iPhone Speaker Not Working

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Check the Ring/Silent switch

Locate the Ring/Silent switch on the left side of your iPhone above the volume buttons. If you see orange, the phone is in Silent mode. Flip the switch toward the screen until the orange disappears and you hear the ringer sound.

Note: The switch can get stuck in lint or cases. Remove your case and toggle it several times to ensure proper contact.
  2. 2 min

    Test volume levels and settings

Press the volume up button repeatedly until you reach maximum volume. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right. Test the speaker by playing music from the Music app or a video from Photos.

Note: Volume buttons control different audio streams depending on what's active. Test in multiple apps to isolate the issue.
  3. 3 min

    Clean the speaker grilles

Power off your iPhone completely. Use a clean, dry toothbrush to gently brush debris from the speaker grilles at the bottom of the device. Brush away from the phone to avoid pushing debris deeper. Use compressed air in short bursts to blow out remaining particles.

Note: Avoid liquids or sharp objects. Even small amounts of pocket lint can completely block sound output.
  4. 2 min

    Disable Bluetooth audio routing

Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth completely. Test your speaker again. If it works, your iPhone was routing audio to a connected Bluetooth device. Turn Bluetooth back on and forget problematic devices by tapping the 'i' icon next to their names and selecting Forget This Device.

Note: iPhones remember dozens of Bluetooth devices and may automatically connect to ones you forgot about, like old car systems or headphones.
  5. 3 min

    Check for software conflicts

Close all apps by double-tapping the home button (or swiping up from the bottom on Face ID models) and swiping up on each app preview. Restart your iPhone by holding the power button and either volume button until the power slider appears, then slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds before turning it back on.

Note: Audio apps sometimes hold exclusive control over the speaker system even when backgrounded.
  6. 2 min

    Reset all audio settings

Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode when prompted. This preserves your data but resets all system preferences including Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, and audio configurations.

Note: This nuclear option fixes software-level audio routing problems that survive normal restarts.

    Test in Safe Mode

Force restart your iPhone by quickly pressing volume up, then volume down, then holding the power button until you see the Apple logo. This loads iOS without third-party modifications. Test the speaker immediately after restart before opening any apps.

Note: If speakers work after force restart but fail later, a specific app or iOS bug is the culprit.
