Step by step
Clean the TrueDepth camera system
Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the notch area at the top of your iPhone screen. Remove any dirt, makeup, or screen protector residue from the front-facing camera and infrared sensors. Avoid using liquids or compressed air.
Note: Face ID uses invisible infrared light, so even transparent smudges can block recognition.Check Face ID settings and requirements
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Verify that iPhone Unlock is enabled. Ensure you're holding the phone 10-20 inches from your face in portrait orientation with eyes open and looking directly at the screen.
Note: Face ID works best in normal lighting conditions and may struggle in complete darkness or very bright sunlight.Force restart your iPhone
Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. This clears temporary software issues affecting Face ID processing.
Note: This method works for iPhone X and newer models that support Face ID.Reset Face ID completely
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then tap Reset Face ID. After the reset completes, tap Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions to re-scan your face, moving your head slowly in a complete circle.
Note: Set up Face ID in the same lighting conditions where you typically use your iPhone for better recognition.Add an alternate appearance
Return to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and tap Set Up an Alternate Appearance. Scan your face again, this time with any accessories you frequently wear like glasses, hats, or masks. This improves recognition accuracy across different looks.
Note: The alternate appearance feature can also help if your appearance has changed significantly since the original setup.Update iOS to the latest version
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. Apple regularly releases Face ID improvements and bug fixes through iOS updates. Restart your iPhone after the update completes.
Note: Enable automatic updates in Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates to prevent future Face ID issues.Contact Apple Support for hardware issues
If Face ID still fails after software troubleshooting, the TrueDepth camera system may have hardware damage. Use the Apple Support app or visit apple.com/support to schedule a diagnostic appointment at an Apple Store or authorized service provider.
Note: Face ID hardware repairs typically require replacing the entire front camera module and must be performed by Apple to maintain security features.
