How to Fix AirDrop When It Fails on iPhone

Difficulty
Beginner
Tested on
iOS 18.4 - iPhone 15 Pro
You will need
iPhone, active Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Adjust AirDrop visibility settings

Open Settings and navigate to General > AirDrop. Select Everyone for 10 Minutes to ensure the device is discoverable by all nearby contacts. If the target device is in your Contacts, ensure Contacts Only is selected on both devices.

Note: Selecting Everyone for 10 Minutes is the most effective way to rule out contact syncing errors.
  2. 30 sec

    Toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Tap the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons to disable them, wait five seconds, then tap them again to enable both. AirDrop requires both services to establish a handshake between devices.

  3. 30 sec

    Disable Personal Hotspot

AirDrop cannot function while an active Personal Hotspot is broadcasting. Navigate to Settings > Personal Hotspot and toggle Allow Others to Join to the off position.

  4. 30 sec

    Disable Focus modes

Open Control Center and verify that Do Not Disturb or any other Focus mode is inactive. These modes often suppress incoming AirDrop requests to prevent interruptions.

Note: Check the status icon in the Control Center to ensure Do Not Disturb is not currently enabled.
  5. 2 min

    Restart your iPhone

Press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider to shut down the device, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to restart. A system reboot clears temporary cache conflicts affecting wireless protocols.
