Step by step
Trigger a manual Google Drive backup
Open the Settings app on your current device and navigate to System > Backup. Ensure 'Backup by Google One' is toggled on, then tap 'Back up now' to synchronize your app data, contacts, and system settings to your Google account.
Note: Verify that your photos and videos are backed up by opening the Google Photos app and ensuring the backup status icon shows as complete.Document active authentication methods
List every account requiring two-factor authentication. Open your authenticator applications, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, and ensure cloud sync is active to prevent lockout on the new hardware.
Note: For banking or sensitive apps, confirm if you need to manually remove the old device from the 'Registered Devices' list within the specific app settings.Secure chat and message archives
Navigate to the settings menu in WhatsApp or other encrypted messaging apps. Select Chats > Chat backup and perform a manual backup to your Google Drive to ensure your message history is preserved.
Note: Ensure you have your end-to-end encryption key saved in a password manager if you use encrypted backups.Verify external storage and local files
Check for files stored locally on an SD card or within specific app folders that do not automatically sync to the cloud. Use a file manager app to move these files to Google Drive or a physical storage medium.
Note: Do not forget to remove the physical SIM card or eSIM profile from the source device after the transfer is confirmed.Initiate the setup process
Power on the new device and follow the initial configuration prompts. Select 'Restore from backup' when prompted to pull data from your Google account cloud backup to the new hardware.
Note: Keep both devices connected to power during the data restoration process to prevent interruption.Perform a post-transfer integrity audit
Open your primary apps to verify that logins have persisted. Check the Contacts, Calendar, and Photos apps to ensure all data points from the old device appear correctly on the new device.
Note: Wait until you are certain all data is accounted for before factory resetting your old device.
