Step by step
Confirm Backup Status
Open the Google Photos app and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner. Verify that Backup is toggled to On. If you see a warning icon, tap it to view specific synchronization errors.
Note: Ensure your device is connected to Wi-Fi if you have restricted mobile data usage.Check Storage Space
Navigate to the Google One app or the Google Photos settings menu under Manage Storage. Confirm your Google account has remaining storage capacity. If your cloud storage is full, syncing will halt immediately.
Note: You can delete large files or unneeded emails in Gmail to free up shared Google storage.Clear App Cache
Open Settings, select Apps, and tap See all apps. Find and select Photos, then tap Storage & cache. Select Clear cache to remove temporary data that may be obstructing the sync process.
Note: Do not select Clear storage/data unless you are prepared to re-sign into the app and reload your thumbnails.Adjust Battery Optimization
Go to Settings, select Apps, and locate Photos. Tap Battery and ensure the setting is configured to Unrestricted. This prevents the Android OS from killing the backup process in the background to save power.
Note: Optimized or Restricted battery settings often pause background sync tasks.Force Stop and Restart
In the Photos app information page within Settings, tap Force stop. Re-open the Google Photos app immediately afterward to trigger a fresh handshake with the Google servers.
Note: This forces the app to re-check its status against your cloud library.Verify Software Version
Open the Google Play Store, search for Google Photos, and check for an Update button. If an update is available, install it to ensure compatibility with the latest API changes for Google cloud services.
Note: Outdated app versions are a frequent cause of handshake failures with Google servers.
