How to Fix Android Auto Connectivity Issues

Difficulty
Intermediate
Tested on
Android 15 - Pixel 8 Pro
You will need
USB-IF certified data cable, active Google account, vehicle with Android Auto support

Step by step

  1. 1 min

    Verify the physical connection

Inspect your USB cable for physical damage or fraying. Replace the existing cable with a high-speed, USB-IF certified data cable to ensure proper bandwidth for projection data.

Note: Charging-only cables will not transmit data to your vehicle.
  2. 1 min

Clear Android Auto cache and data

Navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Android Auto. Tap Storage & cache, then select Clear cache followed by Clear storage to reset the application state.

Note: This will not delete your personal app data, only system configuration files.
  3. 1 min

    Update system software

Open the Google Play Store and search for Android Auto to ensure the application is at the latest version. Verify your phone's OS is updated via Settings > System > Software update.

  4. 1 min

    Remove and re-pair vehicle profile

Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto. Select Previously connected cars and tap the three-dot menu to Forget all cars. Initiate a fresh pairing sequence by reconnecting the USB cable.

  5. 1 min

    Check date and time settings

Verify that your phone's time and date settings are set to automatic. Android Auto security protocols require precise synchronization between the device and vehicle clock to establish a handshake.

Note: Navigate to Settings > System > Date & time.
  6. 1 min

    Disable battery optimization

Navigate to Settings > Apps > Android Auto > App battery usage and select Unrestricted. This prevents the Android power management system from killing the background process required for continuous projection.
