Foundations
Foundations is the starting point for the HowTo Finance personal finance guides. These five pieces deal with the habits that everything else depends on: knowing where the money goes, controlling the categories that tend to drift, and keeping a cushion for the month that goes wrong.
Johnnie's "How to Build a 3-Month Emergency Fund" sets out the steps: work out three months of essential spending, keep it in a high-yield savings account, and contribute automatically until it is full. His "How to Run a 15-Minute Quarterly Money Review" is a short recurring checklist of things to look at with a calendar reminder and a laptop, so problems are caught early. "The Energy Bill Audit" is a one-weekend project for understanding what is actually in your electric bill, using your meter and your own appliances.
Isabella's two guides compare specific budgeting tools. "Cash Envelope Budgeting, Physically" describes envelopes as a physical device, explains how they work and which spending categories they suit, and covers the predictable ways they break down. "Grocery Systems: Coupon Apps vs. the List Method" compares two approaches that intervene at different points in the same shopping trip. Together these guides form a basic system you can set up in a few sittings before moving on to the savings, housing, insurance and estate guides elsewhere in the section.
Foundations sits under Personal in the HowTo Finance menu. It has 4 sections: Budgeting & Cash Flow, Emergency Savings, Net Worth & Tracking and Money Mindset.
